I became a vegetarian in Summer of 2014, so not a very long time ago. I was meaning to make the switch for as long as two years before that, have to say that the decision was heavily influenced by my meditation practice; all of a sudden eating veggies and fruit seemed like the best thing to do.
My first non-meat meals consisted of only the very basics, sometimes I would spend weeks eating only rice and carrots, and the occasional peas. I was mostly trying to get rid of the meat cravings, and get my body adjusted to a new and healthy diet. It caught up with me quite quickly.
Several months after my diet change, I started to notice some changes in my moods and energy levels, at first I didn’t want to blame the food, but I started to notice some synchronicities in my life that suggested all kinds of things about my well-being, one of which was lack of nutrients such as iron in my diet. I took a second look at my diet, and realized that I was indeed eating very little amounts of foods that were rich in iron.

Two weeks after my iron incident, having adjusted my diet, I was back to feeling normal and healthy once again. This time, more interested in learning about the food I consume, and more interested in nutrition and what kind of foods are out there that we usually avoid from our diets altogether — such as superfoods.
That’s the raw and short story of me becoming a vegetarian, and what I encountered along the way. It was a very swift change in diet for me, and for the most part I just wanted to leave meat behind. One of the reasons for wanting to leave meat behind was animal cruelty.
I love animals, and I know they love me back. So it made perfect sense to express my respect towards the animal kingdom by going meat free for life.

How do you justify eating an animal that has spent most of his life living isolated within a cage, being fed food that is altered for rapid growth, and having little to no fresh air to breathe at any given time. It really strikes you once you begin to accept the fact that this is how majority of the meat on our supermarket shelves is produced today.

It’s longer than what I have stated in the title of the post, but if you need to watch this video for more than 6 minutes to understand the concept of what is currently going on in moderns farms across the world, then heck — perhaps a meat-free diet is not for you after all.
It’s a deeply moving video, yet deeply disturbing at the same time. The first time I watched it, I had tears coming down from my face. You simply can’t justify having a system such as this in place, and not feel guilty about it at some level. You might have a family to feed, and a house to care for, but majority of what you see in the video is only possible because of corporations and food chains who need vast amounts of meat on regular basis.
Animals, just like humans, are intelligent beings and capable of sustaining their own ecosystem’s of life, that is; if we humans allow them to do so. There are countless videos on sites such as YouTube — displaying the capabilities of compassion that animals such as cows, pigs and chickens are able to express.
Meat is just another habit we need to teach ourselves how to live without.
